Microcontact Web application Administration module

One of the most powerful parts of your application is the admin interface where trusted users can manage content. It is advisable to appoint one or two superusers.  A superuser has the highest privileges in your application and can change anything. The superuser is also the only user who can view personal information of the respondents. Therefore it not advisable to have too many superusers.

  • Step 1

Login as a (super) user with your username and password.

  • The superuser can create and manage users and user groups.
Each user group has its own level of permissions.
The permissions for users are divided as follows:
-Only super users are able to view contact details.
-Only super users have permission to the page where users can be added or removed, grouped etc.
-Access to view objects is limited to users with the “view” or “change” permission for that type of object.
-Access to view the “add” data and add an object is limited to users with the “add” permission for that type of object.
-Access to view the change list, view the “change” form and change an object is limited to users with the “change” permission for that type of object.
-Access to delete an object is limited to users with the “delete” permission for that type of object.

  • Step 2

The Microcontact Web application comes with a user authentication system that handles these user accounts, groups and permissions.
The superuser can create and manage users and user groups.

  • You can add solis accounts by entering the solis id as the username and the same random password twice. The random password may be discarded because the actual solis password takes precedence.

  • Step 3

Users who have permission to add or change previously sampled recordings can choose add or change in the recordings screen, fill the metadata fields and click on “save” to add a recording to the database or change an existing recording.

  • Step 4

Users who have permission to view data can filter the recordings on metadata like dialect, country, age etc. etc.
Users with the right permissions can customize the display names of countries, the display of dialects and the display name of languages. The superuser can change these permissions for each user.

  • The Microcontact Web application is suited to sample data for research. Analysis of the data requires software the UU provides especially for this purpose, like R or SPSS. The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics offers methodological advice and assists in usage of data analysis software.

  • Step 5

Users who have the permission to add countries, are able to add new countries which could be selected by users of the website and app. Simply navigate to Recordings > Countries in the admin module and look for the ‘Add country’ button (see screenshot). In the screen that appears you need to add the name of the country in various languages, and enter the shortcode for the country (e.g. ‘IT’, ‘US’, ‘AR’. A list of standard ISO codes can be found here). After saving a country, it will show up in the website as well as the app (this might require refreshing the page).
